Troop Camping
Troop camping provides unique opportunities for girls to develop their leadership skills. Camping provides girls the opportunity to discover their outdoor skills and develop an appreciation for nature, connect through cooperative learning and teamwork, and to take action by using their new skills in future girl led outdoor experiences. Troops must have the proper girl-adult ratio and the group must be accompanied by a Troop Camp trained adult for the type of camping they are doing.
Troop Camper
A troop camper is an adult volunteer who has completed the required Outdoor Skills Training. This individual must be present on all Girl Scout troop camping events to guide them during the outdoor experience and should also assist the troop in preparing for the trip (Safety-Wise, p. 118). The Troop Camper can be qualified in Outdoor Skills – I, II, III, or IV, and the planned activities must match the level of training. The Troop Camper can be responsible for no more than 40 participants (including adults) during the same outdoor event.
Outdoor Skills – I
This is the first step to prepare the adult volunteer to plan a troop camping experience sleeping in a cabin, lodge or structured building. This course teaches meal planning, kaper charts, equipment, and packing, in addition to fire building and outdoor cooking. A Home Study workbook, included with this course, contains valuable information, key points and questions for each section. This information can be learned at each participant’s own pace and is an important part of the Outdoor Skills – I course. The Home Study workbook will be sent to you and must be completed prior to attending the course. This course is required for troops desiring to use cabins, lodges, or indoor facilities while camping.
