FAQs about Resident Camp
What about safety at camp?
Girl Scouts of Citrus Council staff take every precaution to ensure all campers remain physically and emotionally safe while in our care. All camp staff receive extensive training in risk management, American Red Cross First Aid and CPR, and emergency response. Mah-Kah-Wee and Riverpoint Program Center staff follow Girl Scout’s stringent Safety-Wise guidelines for all programs and activities.
What is the staff like?
Girl Scouts of Citrus Council camp staff are recruited for a combination of their skills, experience, and enthusiasm for working with girls in an outdoor setting. All staff must go through an extensive interview process, including a background check, before an offer of employment is made. Most of our staff are former Girl Scouts, current college students, or teachers. Staff go through a comprehensive weeklong training that covers all of the skills necessary for ensuring a safe, happy and successful camping season for our campers.
Where will I be sleeping?
At Camp Mah-Kah-Wee, girls will either sleep in platform tents, cabins, or a bunkhouse. Typically, younger girls in grades 2-3 stay in the bunkhouse or cabins, and older girls sleep in platform tents to provide for progression with the camping experience.
What are kapers?
Kapers are a camp tradition that enhance the sense of ownership and pride campers take in their camp. By sharing the task of keeping their units and program areas clean, campers learn more about teamwork, cooperation, and caring for their environment.
What can campers buy at the trading post?
Every week campers have the opportunity to purchase souvenirs, gifts, and other fun gear. Some camp essentials like water bottles, flashlights and cameras are available as well.
What is the food like at camp?
Delicious and nutritious, of course! All camp menus are carefully designed for the perfect balance of taste and nutrition by the Food Service Manager and Camp Director. Meals are served in our dining hall. Units usually have an outdoor cooking experience once per week. A camp tradition, cookouts allow campers to develop outdoor skills in a comfortable setting. From pizza to silver turtles, S'mores to bulls-eyes, the cookout is sure to please.
What do we have to wear on our feet?
To ensure the safety of all girls we require everyone to wear closed toe shoes with a full back at all times when walking anywhere on the property. The only exception is when the girls are in the showers we require that they wear shower shoes/slippers to prevent slipping. Also when the girls are participating in any waterfront activities on the lake they are required to wear water shoes that cover the entire foot or an extra pair of sneakers. Crocks and sandals will not be permitted.
What do campers do in the evenings?
Evening programs are designed by the Program Director to provide campers with an exciting all-camp experience. Possible activities include: luau, sock hop, pirate party, Twin Day, Camp Olympics, Camp Carnival and more!At the close of every session, campers enjoy the magic of camp one last time with a camp-wide closing campfire. This traditional activity allows campers to say goodbye to friends, old and new, until next summer.
